I Would Love To Join But I'm Too Old...No You're Not

September 6, 2021

There are many people that have said they would love to join the ranks of the Pleasant Valley Fire District, but feel that they "are too old". Well...meet Chris Andrews and John Fumo, two of our newest probationary firefighters, who will disprove that thought.

For many years, these two "probies" always wanted to join and help, but with family commitments, work, and active memberships in other community groups there was no time to commit and join.

Now that their lives have "somewhat" slowed down, these two friends, Chris who is turning 51 years old next month and John who is 58 years old are thrilled that they joined.

So why did they join? John said "if we are to survive as a nation under one God we must unite and stand together. I wish I would’ve done this 40 years ago".

Chris has been exposed to the fire service since he was young. He said, "I have always had an interest in becoming a fireman because my father was a longtime volunteer and a past Fire Commissioner with the Hughsonville Fire District. I wish I had committed to doing this years ago, but it took my son, Shane, to finally get me to join Pleasant Valley. We both became members earlier this year and now I’m learning how to serve and help our Pleasant Valley community, while Shane is on military leave from the firehouse and at basic training with the United States Marine Corps at Parris Island, South Carolina and preparing to serve our country”.

Chris and John have started taking their fire support training classes and will soon take their CEVO (Coaching the Emergency Vehicle Operator) and EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operator Course) to learn how to drive all the emergency vehicles in the Pleasant Valley Fire District fleet.

There you go, nobody is too old! Is there a fire in you? If so, fill out the application or stop at either one of Pleasant Valley Fire District fire houses.
