The U.S. Flag Code says, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” When an American flag is worn beyond repair, it should be retired in a respectful manner.
A flag burning ceremony held on Flag Day is a respectful way to retire an unserviceable American flag, involving folding, saluting, and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance before the flag is burned in a fire.
The eighth annual Flag Day ceremony was held at the Salt Point Fire Company quarters where residents could respectfully burn their old, ripped and unusable American flags.
Under the direction of Salt Point Fire Company Vice President Colin Burgess, it was truly a community event, being sponsored by the Salt Point Fire Company, run by the members of the Pleasant Valley Fire District, Pleasant Valley/Millbrook American Legion, and Scouting America. These organizations play an important role in keeping traditions alive while instilling respect for national symbols.
It was a deeply meaningful event, honoring the tradition of retiring American flags with the respect they deserve. Flag Day ceremonies like this bring communities together, fostering a shared sense of patriotism and reverence for the symbol of the nation. |
