On April 26th at 7:47 pm, the Pleasant Valley and Roosevelt Fire Districts were dispatched for a structure fire on Salt Point Turnpike in the town of Hyde Park. Pleasant Valley Chiefs John Cronk and Ray Broas arrived to find heavy fire in a detached garage with the home approximately 6 feet away. Roosevelt Fire District apparatus was first on scene and firefighters stretched lines to suppress the fire in the garage and protect the house. Pleasant Valley personnel established a water supply and ensured that all occupants were safe.
The fire was quickly knocked down with damage contained to the exterior of the garage and the attic area. During overhaul it was discovered that an oil tank inside the garage was ruptured and leaking fuel oil. The Dutchess County Hazardous Materials Response Team was requested to the scene to mitigate the spill. No loss of life or injuries were reported as a result of the fire and the occupants were able to return to their home. The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division. Fire department personnel cleared the scene at 9:48 pm.
Agencies assisting at the scene included the Roosevelt Fire District, Hyde Park Police Department, Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation, Dutchess County Haz-mat Team, and the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division. The Pleasant Valley Fire District was covered by the Millbrook Fire Department during the fire. The Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response Dispatchers and County Coordinators provided crucial support throughout the incident.
The Pleasant Valley Fire District would like to thank all agencies involved for their teamwork and professionalism. PVFD would also like to remind residents to have working CO and smoke detectors in their homes and to have an evacuation plan in case of emergencies. |
