LODD - In Memory of Chief David Gagnon - Cottekill Fire Department

July 5, 2026

The Pleasant Valley Fire District stands together with other fire districts, departments and companies across New York State in mourning the line of duty death of 30+ year member, Chief David Gagnon of the Cottekill Fire Department in Ulster County on July 3, 2026.

Shortly after 3 p.m. last Friday, Cottekill Fire Chief David Gagnon was among the crew members who responded to a tree in the roadway in the town of Rosendale. While working to remove the tree, Chief Gagnon was struck by a portion of the tree that unexpectedly snapped.

Fellow Cottekill FD firefighters, the Bloomington Fire District, Marbletown First Aid, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, and the Rosendale Police Department initiated lifesaving measures. The chief, however, succumbed to his injuries.

The department said in a statement: “Chief Gagnon faithfully served the Cottekill Fire District and his community with dedication, leadership and commitment. His passing is a profound loss to his family, fellow firefighters, the department and the community.”

In addition to his firematic role, his military career spanned 35 years in the New York Army National Guard. A graduate of the U.S. Army War College, Chief Gagnon attained the rank of Colonel prior to his retirement.

We wish to extend our deepest condolences to our brothers and sisters in the Cottekill Fire District and to all his family and friends. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

We pray you all heal together and never forget his ultimate sacrifice. God Speed brother!

May he Rest In Peace...
