| Arlington High School Senior and Pleasant Valley Fire District Firefighter/EMT Daniel Cronk has been awarded the prestigious Charlie Johnson Award by the Arlington School District. Charlie Johnson’s legacy of selflessness began long before he was recognized for extraordinary bravery during the Korean War. On June 12, 1953, he lost his life during the Battle of Outpost Harry, protecting his fellow soldiers. His actions earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor, but to the Arlington community, Charlie’s heroism was already well known because of his leadership, sportsmanship, and daily acts of kindness. Charlie’s classmates appreciated him not only for his accomplishments but also for his positive attitude and respect for others. He was recognized as “Most Friendly” and for having the “Best Manners,” which reflected his warmth and considerate nature. Charlie also received the “Babe Ruth” Award for outstanding sportsmanship and fair play, highlighting his commitment to integrity and fair conduct. Years after his passing, those who knew Charlie continued to speak highly of him. After his death in the Korean War, then Arlington Superintendent Harold Storm described him as “one of the finest and best-liked students we ever had.” His coach, Fritz Jordan, called him “a gentleman and a great humanitarian,” noting, “He died as he lived, thinking of his fellow man first.” Charlie Johnson’s story remains a powerful example of how true greatness is defined by character, compassion, and putting others first. Each year, Arlington High School, based on teacher recommendations, honors Charlie Johnson’s memory by presenting this award to graduating seniors who embody his qualities of leadership, kindness, courage, and service. Firefighter/EMT Daniel Cronk’s recognition continues this proud tradition. Congratulations! |
