Recruit New York Day

April 26, 2026

Residents all over New York State had the opportunity last weekend to visit their local fire stations and learn what is involved in becoming a volunteer firefighter.

This event was part of RecruitNY Weekend, an annual effort in which volunteer fire departments across the state welcome residents in hopes of encouraging new volunteers to join.

RecruitNY began in 2011 in response to a steady decrease in volunteer numbers, aiming to strengthen recruitment throughout New York. Over the past two decades, volunteer fire departments in the state have seen a loss of 40,000 members.

Throughout the weekend, participating departments organized open houses where residents could tour fire stations, try on firefighting equipment, watch live demonstrations, and discover the many ways they can serve as volunteer firefighters.

The Pleasant Valley Fire District was among nearly 400 departments taking part in this statewide initiative.

Visitors had the chance to speak with department members, explore the firehouse, sit in the equipment, have their blood pressure taken, watched a vehicle extrication drill and experience wearing firefighting gear during the event.
